Po roce 1989 se ale jeho situace zm\u011bnila, byl zvolen jako poslanec \u010ceskoslovensk\u00e9 republiky. S\u00e1m P\u00e1nek ale p\u0159izn\u00e1v\u00e1, \u017ee s t\u00edm p\u0159\u00edli\u0161 nepo\u010d\u00edtal a brzy po sv\u00e9m zvolen\u00ed mand\u00e1t slo\u017eil. ,,<em>Mohl bych napsat pov\u00eddku, jak jsem nebyl ani den poslancem<\/em>.\u2018\u2018 \u0159\u00edk\u00e1 s \u00fasm\u011bvem P\u00e1nek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zaj\u00edmav\u00e9 je, \u017ee u\u017e jako student m\u011bl touhu pom\u00e1hat. V roce 1988 uspo\u0159\u00e1dal svoji prvn\u00ed sb\u00edrku pro Arm\u00e9nii. Pot\u00e9 byl u vzniku Nadace Lidov\u00fdch novin a v roce 1992 zalo\u017eil spole\u010dn\u011b s Jarom\u00edrem \u0160t\u011btinou na\u0161i nejzn\u00e1m\u011bj\u0161\u00ed neziskovou organizaci \u010clov\u011bk v t\u00edsni, kde dodnes p\u016fsob\u00ed jako \u0159editel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u010clov\u011bk v t\u00edsni je nejv\u011bt\u0161\u00ed st\u0159edoevropskou organizac\u00ed sv\u00e9ho druhu.
